How to Win at Mahjong Solitaire
Mahjong solitaire looks like a game of spotting pairs. It is really a game of order: on a solvable board you can still paint yourself into a corner by removing the right tiles at the wrong time. These habits keep your options open.
1. Look before you match
The most common way to lose is to grab the first pair you see. Before removing a pair, ask what it frees - and what it buries. A match that opens up three new tiles is far better than one that opens none.
2. When you can see all four, think twice
Most faces have four copies, which form two pairs. If all four are available, you can usually take any two. But if two of them sit on top of tiles you will need later, clear those two first, so removing them frees what is underneath. Pairing the wrong two can strand the other two - and everything beneath them.
3. Free the tall stacks and long rows early
Tiles buried under a peak or wedged in the middle of a row are the ones that cause dead ends. Spend your early moves opening those up while you still have plenty of choices, rather than clearing easy edge tiles you could take anytime.
4. Save flowers and seasons for logjams
Because any flower matches any flower (and any season any season), the bonus tiles are your most flexible pieces. If you are close to stuck, an unused flower or season can often be the move that keeps you going. Don't spend them the instant they appear.
5. Don't empty a suit you still need
If a tile you can only reach later needs a partner, make sure you have not already removed both of its potential matches elsewhere. Keeping a matching tile “in reserve” near a buried one is often worth it.
6. Use the safety net
In Mahjong Tide every board is guaranteed solvable and we never secretly reshuffle, so if you reach a dead end it is a real one - a different order would have worked. The live Winnable mark turns red the moment a move locks the board, and Undo then says how many moves it will take back: enough to return to the last point a win was still possible. Turn all of it off in Strict mode once you want the pure challenge.
